Using IDL with a local license file on your Mac
You would believe that a company that sells software licenses for thousands of Euros would make it as easy as possible for their users to use their software once they have rightfully acquired a license. With ITTVIS’s IDL this is unfortunately not the case. Instead of selecting the license file with a file picker you have to do all sorts of tricks if you want to use IDL with your laptop while on the way.
Since I was lucky to get a machine-specific license for this software (that is needed for data reduction in astronomy) and was then struggling to get the software to find the license file, I here want to briefly describe what I did to make it run.
I placed the license file into /Applications/itt/license/license.dat, edited /etc/hosts so that it includes the line

Liebe Blog-Leser!
Nach zweiwöchigem Wohnungsmarathon haben Cordi und ich endlich eine schöne Dreizimmerwohnung in der Nähe von Heidelberg gefunden: In der Spitalstr. 30 in dem für Mac-User auch vom Namen her schönen Eppelheim. 🙂 Der Ort ist einer der wenigen in der Gegend um Heidelberg, der noch nicht eingemeindet ist (“Dafür haben wir gekämpft!” sagte uns ein Verwandte des Vermieters). Dennoch ist er mit der Straßenbahn gut an die Heidelberger Innenstadt angebunden. Meine Fahrzeit zum Institut verkürzt sich sogar um eine Minute. Eppelheim ist von ca. 5000 Einwohnern nach dem Krieg auf derzeit fast 15 000 gewachsen. Die Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt müssen wir erst noch finden, aber es hat jedenfalls ein sehenswertes kleines Dorf-Zentrum mit Wasserturm und einige schöne kleinen Straßen…
Die Bildergalerie (unter ileo.de/gallery) ist derzeit übrigens leider außer Betrieb. Nach dem Umzug ist hoffentlich wieder etwas mehr Zeit, dann wird die Website auf Vordermann gebracht.

Eine frei erfundene Bahndurchsage
Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren auf Gleis 9, bitte beachten Sie folgende Durchsage: Der Inter City Express 675, Abfahrt 17:35, von München Hauptbahnhof über München Pasing, Augsburg, Würzburg, Fulda, Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe, Göttingen, Hannover, Hamburg mit Zugteil nach Bremen, dessen 1. Klasse-Waggons in den Abschnitten A und F zu finden sind und der heute ein Spezialangebot im Bordrestaurant angeboten hat, nämlich zwei paar Nürnberger mit original bayrischem süßen Senf, dazu Sauerkraut (wenn Sie möchten auch eine Breze) und ein kleines Glas Wasser für günstige neun Euro 35, fährt heute wegen einer Störung im Betriebsablauf leider nicht.

Santiago!
Es ist schon lustig, wenn man sich vertraut fühlt in einer Stadt, die so weit weg ist. Aber vertraut fühlte es sich an, als ich heute Nachmittag in die Innenstadt gefahren bin: Die Gummi-bereifte Metro (“Mi Metro. Tu Metro”), die Haltestellen-Namen, teilweise sogar bestimmte Geschäfte an manchen Ecken… Lustig, was man sich alles merkt!
In Santiago bin ich in La Moneda, den chilenischen Präsidentenpalast gegangen, anschließend ein bißchen durch die Innenstadt, am Plaza de Armas vorbei zum Museo de Bellas Artes, wo es sowohl weltbekannte Werke von Pablo Picasso zu sehen gibt, als auch nicht ganz so berühmte aber (mindestens so!) sehenswerte Werke von chilenischen Künstlern. Interessant: Die Titel und Beschreibungen konnte ich teilweise verstehen — dank Latein!
Auf dem Rückweg schlenderte ich am Rio Mapocho (die Mapuche sind ein Ureinwohner-Volk Chiles) entlang zum Baquedano (Plaza Italia), noch ein paar Fotos an diesem herrlichen Platz und mit der Metro wieder zurück zur Escuela Militar, von wo aus es nur noch ein paar Gehminuten bis zum ESO-Gästehaus sind…

Kosmologs
In letzter Zeit ist es hier ein bißchen ruhiger geworden… Meine astronomischen Beiträge (zum Beispiel auch über den bevorstehenden nächsten Chile-Trip) schreibe ich seit einiger Zeit ja bei den KOSMOlogs. Am Dienstag habe ich dort in einem Artikel Stellung genommen zu der aktuellen (recycelten) Diskussion, ob ein Teilchenbeschleuniger, wie der bald in Betrieb gehende LHC am CERN, durch die Produktion von schwarzen Löchern die Welt zerstören könnte.
Festplatte formattieren
Beim Formattieren einer von Haus aus DOS (FAT) formattierten externen 750 GB LaCie Festplatte trat unter Mac OS X Leopard in verschiendsten Variationen ein Fehler auf, wenn ich versucht habe, die Festplatte mit einem moderneren Mac-Dateisystem zu formattieren. Das Formattieren funktionierte, wenn man es im DOS-System versuchte. Leider half die Fehlermeldung wenig weiter: “Formattieren fehlgeschlagen”.
Der Fehler tritt auf, wenn man unter Mac OS X mit dem Festplatten-Dienstprogramm eine mit Partitionsschema “Master Boot Record” versehene Festplatte mit einem Mac-Dateisystem (Mac OS Extended in verschiedensten Varianten) formattieren will. Die Lösung des Problems, wie in diesem Beitrag beschrieben, ist den Tab “Partitionieren” auswählen, dort unter Optionen als Partitionsschema “GUID” auswählen (oder Apple-Partitionsschema, falls von der Platte gebootet werden soll) und die Platte mit einer oder mehr Partitionen im gewünschten Dateisystem zu formattieren. Dann klappt’s.
Heute mal im UniSPIEGEL
Am 25. Januar bekam “meine” WG, bestehend aus der Senegalesin Emmanuelle, der Italienerin Veronica, dem Rostocker Lars und mir, Besuch von Jan Friedmann, Redakteur des UniSPIEGEL für ein mehrstündiges Gespräch inklusive Foto-Shooting… Dem zuvorgegangen war eine Ausschreibung auf SPIEGEL Online:

Als sehr internationale und durchaus diskussionsfreudige WG haben wir uns davon angesprochen gefühlt und uns einfach mal per (ziemlich kurzer…) E-Mail an die dort angegebene Adresse “beworben”. Am 8. Januar bekam ich eine Mail von dem Spiegel-Redakteur, ob wir wohl mal telefonieren könnten… Einige Telefongespräche und E-Mails später war klar, dass wir der WG-Rat Deutschlands sind! 🙂
Wir vereinbarten einen Termin und Jan Friedmann rückte mitsamt Fotograf Theo Barth an. Wir diskutierten etwa zwei Stunden über das jetzt nach und nach in Deutschland eingeführte Rauchverbot, währenddessen und anschließend schoss Fotograf Theo Barth etliche Gigabyte an Fotos von uns: Beim Diskutieren, in der WG, vor dem Wohnheim, am Neckar mit Heidelberg im Hintergrund.
Nun, etwa drei Wochen später, ist die Diskussion mitsamt Fotos im UniSPIEGEL erschienen! Derzeit ist das PDF davon leider nur für Abonennent abrufbar. Aber in zwei Wochen soll es online kostenlos verfügbar sein — und ansonsten muss man sich halt eines der über 200 000 gedruckten Exemplare sichern…
Update (7.3.08): Nun ist der Artikel auch als normaler SPIEGEL-Online-Artikel abrufbar… Ich stelle mit Verwunderung fest, dass nicht nur für die gedruckte Ausgabe (“In Deutschland brauchst Du eine Regel”), sondern auch für die Online-Ausgabe (“Das Rauchverbot ist ein Riesenfortschritt”) meine unschuldige Meinung (im Wortalut) zum Titel verwendet wurde.
Und, übrigens, natürlich habe ich nicht gesagt, dass wir bald außerirdisches Leben finden werden… (sondern es lediglich für sehr wahrscheinlich halte, dass demnächst ein erdähnlicher Planet gefunden wird, der Leben beherbegen könnte.)
Die WG hat bereits Verhandlungen für Fan-Artikel mit Markenherstellern aufgenommen… 😉
Rodeln am Pürschling

Dass Astrologie nicht unbedingt für Präzisionsvorhersagen gut ist, hat sich herumgesprochen. Doch “Profi”-Astrologen verkünden dennoch gerne öffentlich tiefe Weisheiten. Die wahren Profi-Astrologen versuchen sich zwar mit immer (noch) weniger aussagekräftigen Formulierungen jeglicher Kritik zu entziehen, aber auch das gelingt ihnen nicht so recht.
Ist es dann nicht bedenklich, wenn die Bahn ihre Kunden mit Geburtstagsmails der folgenden Art für blöd verkauft?
